We are pleased to announce the release version 0.9.0 of CyberGISX. CyberGISX (https://cybergisxhub.cigi.illinois.edu/) is an open online platform that provides streamlined and user-friendly access to advanced cyberinfrastructure and cyberGIS capabilities with an integrated software stack for computationally reproducible and data-intensive geospatial analytics. Users can register for free CyberGISX accounts using their institutional credentials to access the CyberGISX platform.
CyberGISX has been developed by a team led by Dr. Shaowen Wang within the CyberGIS Center for Advanced Digital and Spatial Studies (CyberGIS Center) & CyberInfrastructure and Geospatial Information Laboratory (CIGI Lab) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
CyberGISX is built on more than a decade of leading-edge research on cyberGIS mainly supported by several U.S. federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation. It has been used in a variety of geospatial-related domains such as agriculture, geography and spatial sciences, hydrology and water resources, and public health. Users from more than 4,000 universities, research institutes, and academic organizations in the US and worldwide can quickly register and start using CyberGISX with their institutional credentials.
The release of CyberGISX 0.9.0 includes the following updates for its key components.
- Enhanced Discovery Portal: Users can search for related blogs and notebooks in one place. The newly added “filter by author” feature allows users to quickly locate resources created by specific community users.
- The Community Template has been redesigned such that each content type (e.g., notebooks, blogs) is now organized into a separate tab page. See example community templates for details: Wherecovid-19 and Geospatial Fellows.
- New Kernels – Python 3-0.9.0: While our previous Python 3 kernel (0.8.0) was focused on maintaining reproducibility for work completed before the 0.8.0 release, this release aims to provide newer versions of the same set of packages. New packages include geosnap for geospatial neighborhood analysis and momepy for quantitative analysis of urban structures.
- Hour of CI Support: We have updated CyberGIS-Jupyter to make it compatible with Hour of CI lessons. Hour of CI is a project focused on “Introducing cyberinfrastructure (CI) and cyber literacy, one hour at a time.”
- The CyberGISX Command Line Interface (CLI) has been rewritten in Python using the click toolkit. A short documentation page is available at: https://cybergis.github.io/cybergisx-cli/.
- User Interface is redesigned with new options for file uploads and downloads.
- System Updates: Collecting and storing detailed runtime data about jobs from Slurm scheduler are enabled for usage monitoring. Developer SDK and Slurm container environment are improved for flexible model development.
- Large File Transfers: Partial download for large files is enabled using Globus. Also support is added for multiple Globus downloads for files within the result folder.
- Two new spatiotemporal visualization modules have been added: (1) Multiple Linked Chart (MLC), and (2) Comparison Line Chart (CLC). Each module can be combined with previously developed Multiple Linked Choropleth Maps in a flexible way.
- MLC allows users to visualize multiple time series charts whenever they click a region on a choropleth map. Multiple time series charts can be synchronized. Once a user zooms in a particular time frame on one of the time series charts, the rest of the charts are automatically zoomed in and represent the time series within the selected time frame.
- CLC allows users to visually compare two different time series of two different spatial regions within a single chart. Once a user clicks each of two different regions, a line representing the temporal change of each region is visualized on the same chart.
