Analyzing Urban Hot Spot Growth in the Gunpowder-Patapsco Watershed to Predict Wetland Vulnerability in the Year 2044

Author(s): Zoe Jarvis

This project aims to assess wetland vulnerability to urban development in the Gunpowder-Patapsco watershed (HUC 02060003) located in Baltimore County and Baltimore City, MD. Maryland's wetlands play a critical role in protecting the nation's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay, as they help filter nutrients and pollutants, mitigate flood risks, and provide wildlife habitat. This analysis will identify which wetlands are most at risk from future development by analyzing historic growth patterns using datasets from 2004 and 2024. This 20-year period of data will help predict growth in the next 20 years if urbanization rates do not fluctuate.
