Evaluation of PFAS Water Quality Data at the Lower Darby Creek Area (LDCA) Superfund Site

Author(s): Maria Scudder

PFAS compounds have been detected in groundwater samples collected in the area surrounding the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge located near Folcroft, Pennsylvania. This area, referred to as the Lower Darby Creek Area Superfund Site, was added to the National Priority List in 2001. Recent investigations conducted in 2025 have included the collection of water samples at the locations of groundwater seeps along Lower Darby Creek by the former Folcroft Landfill. This report is an investigation of the recent sample results collected to determine if there is a relationship between the concentrations of PFAS contaminants detected in the upstream versus downstream locations of the site. Since many of the potential sources of contamination are located upstream including a bulk fuel farm, a former incinerator, a sewage treatment plant, and a landfill, our hypothesis is that the concentrations will be higher in the upstream sample locations.
